FOLIO I
The Restless Crust
James Hutton stood at Siccar Point, Scotland, in 1788 and recognized in the angled rock layers a record stretching back beyond comprehension. "We find no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end." Earth was not 6,000 years old; it was unimaginably ancient — 4.54 billion years, as we now know. Geology is the science of taking that time seriously.

FOLIO II
The Continents Drift
Alfred Wegener proposed in 1912 that continents had once been joined as Pangaea. He was ignored, then ridiculed. Vindication came in the 1960s with seafloor spreading (Hess), magnetic stripes on the seafloor (Vine and Matthews), and the synthesis we now call plate tectonics.
Earth's lithosphere is divided into about 15 major plates. They move 2–10 cm per year — fingernail growth — driven by mantle convection and slab pull.

The Three Boundaries
DIVERGENT
Plates pull apart. Mid-Atlantic Ridge, East African Rift. New crust is born.
CONVERGENT
Plates collide. Andes (Nazca-S.America), Himalayas (India-Eurasia). Mountains, deep trenches, volcanoes.
TRANSFORM
Plates slide past. San Andreas Fault, Anatolian Fault. Earthquakes without volcanism.

Deep Time
If Earth's 4.54 billion years compressed into a single calendar year:
A fingernail (~2.5) scratches gypsum but not calcite. A steel knife (~5.5) scratches apatite but not orthoclase. Diamond is 1,500 times harder than corundum on absolute scales — Mohs is logarithmic at the top.
FOLIO VII
The Tambora Year
April 10, 1815: Mount Tambora, on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, erupted with a force ~100 times Mount St. Helens. VEI-7. ~150 km³ of material ejected. The summit collapsed by 1.5 km. ~71,000 dead in Indonesia.
The aerosol veil cooled global average temperature by ~1°C. 1816 — "the year without a summer." Snow in June in New England. Crop failures across Europe and North America. Mary Shelley, trapped indoors at Lake Geneva by the cold rain, wrote Frankenstein.

FOLIO IX
The Resources Beneath
Civilization is built from rocks. Concrete (limestone+aggregate) is the most-consumed material on Earth after water — 4 billion tonnes per year. Steel requires iron ore (mostly from Banded Iron Formations laid down 2.5 Ga). Lithium for batteries comes from Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni and Australia's hard-rock spodumene mines. Rare earth elements — neodymium for magnets, dysprosium for alloys — are concentrated 80% in China.
The energy transition is also a mineral transition. An EV needs 6x the mineral inputs of a gas car; a solar farm 5x more than a gas-fired plant of equal output (IEA 2021).

The Geological Survey
The U.S. Geological Survey was founded in 1879. John Wesley Powell — one-armed Civil War veteran, leader of the first descent of the Grand Canyon — became its second director. He surveyed the arid West and warned that water, not soil, would limit settlement. He was right.
National geological surveys now exist in nearly every country. Their maps and bulletins are the foundation under groundwater management, mineral exploration, hazard zoning, and infrastructure design. Geology is invisible in the way that water and electricity are invisible — until something fails.

The Great Oxidation Event (~2.4 Ga), the Cambrian Explosion, the Permian extinction. The geological record told as a sequence of biospheric crises and reinventions. Companion series to NOVA on plate tectonics and the Anthropocene.
Geologists have proposed a new epoch — the Anthropocene — to mark human reshaping of the planet's surface, atmosphere, biosphere, and sediment. Markers include radioactive fallout from 1950s nuclear tests, plastic in beach sand, fly ash in lakebeds, fossil-fuel carbon isotopes in coral skeletons. The International Commission on Stratigraphy has not yet ratified the term, but the underlying observation is uncontested: humans are now a geological force.
